Humidity is part of daily life in most Indonesian homes, and it changes how materials behave. A finish that looks perfect in a showroom can swell, stain or grow mould after one rainy season.
Timber
Solid timber moves with the air. Leave small gaps for it to breathe, seal every face including the back of a cabinet door, and choose well-dried wood. Veneered boards are more stable for large flat surfaces such as wardrobe doors.
Stone and tiles
Natural stone is porous. Seal it before use and again over the years, especially in kitchens and bathrooms. Honed and textured finishes hide water marks better than polished ones.
Fabric
- Choose removable, washable covers for sofas and cushions
- Prefer linen, cotton blends and performance fabrics over velvet in damp rooms
- Keep upholstered pieces a little away from the wall so air can move
Air
The best material choice still needs air. Cross ventilation, a gap under built-in cabinets and an extractor in the bathroom do more for a room's lifespan than any finish.
